Ready or Not, It’s 2013

Written by John Trotti Here we are nearly six years into a recession every bit as intractable as the one endured by our forebears 80 years ago, most of us lacking a clear vision of what the future holds in store. I’ve come to the conclusion that whatever has gotten us to where we are today will continue to sustain us, and that one day soon we will awaken with the sense that the worst is truly behind us…a vision shared by my merry band of New Age seers. As in past years, I rely on the wisdom of such...... continue reading

Unsteady Terrain Demands Custom Approach

Written by Tim Adkisson Extending along much of the Appalachian Basin, the slippery-sloped Marcellus Shale sits on numerous valuable, untapped natural gas reserves. Close in proximity to many major markets along the East Coast of the United States, it provides a treacherous, yet profitable opportunity for underground utility contractors that specialize in pipe laying and are willing to stand up to the safety risks. Benton-Georgia LLC, a leading underground utility contractor that has employed its s...... continue reading

Giving Erosion Control a Seat at the Table

Written by John Trotti While the economic picture has brightened for many of us and our potential clients, the lessons of the past few years have left an indelible stamp on the entire industry. As most of us in construction have seen, our clients are demanding a greater degree of justification for expenditures that don’t relate to their projected revenue streams, erosion control being a choice example of practices receiving special scrutiny. To complicate the issue further, corporate staffs have become ...... continue reading

Custom Site Challenges, Custom Solutions

Written by  Don Talend Jeff Herndon, co-owner of Herndon Inc. in Lugoff, SC, knows that hilly terrain can mean that a relatively high volume of sediment collects in sedimentation barriers in a short time, necessitating short intervals between removals of sediment buildup. Maintaining intact barriers is one thing; having to clean up after a blown silt fence quite another. Herndon’s company routinely installs Silt-Saver Belted Silt Retention Fence (BSRF) in the medians on highways to protect hydrosee...... continue reading

Post-Fire Watershed Protection Course added to National Water Pollution Prevention Conference

Denver, CO – Wildfires have scorched thousands of acres across the country and “fire season” is still ahead. How do we protect our people, property, infrastructure and watersheds from post-fire erosion, debris flows and flooding hazards before the winter rains arrive? Inlet Expertise

By Carol Brzozowski Whether during construction or post-construction, erosion control contractors are turning to the latest technologies to help site clients manage erosion and stormwater in a way that is cost effective yet comprehensive enough to meet regulatory requirements. An 85-acre athletic field complex being constructed at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, calls for careful erosion control methods. Site runoff flows into a local stream, and the site is in the Chesapeake Bay watershed...... continue reading

A Win-Win for Wildlife and the Contractor

By Daniel C. Brown Few projects involve the challenges faced by FNF Construction Inc. in building 15 miles of new two-lane roadway through the Black Mountains in Arizona. The two new lanes of US 93, completed in December 2010, run parallel to two existing lanes that lead southward from the new Hoover Dam bypass bridge into Arizona. The $72.7 million project also included milling and resurfacing the asphalt on the existing two lanes, widening two existing bridges, two new mainline highway bridges, 34 box...... continue reading

At Home on Soggy Soil

Perry Autin wasn’t born in the swamps and marshes of Louisiana, but he might as well have been. Perry Autin’s spent a good portion of his life there. In his heavy Southern accent, he tells the stories of his early days, driving a marsh buggy through the wetlands, towing an oil exploration crew behind him. He helped design and construct the special vehicles capable of traversing the mud and muck of the Deep South. And today, he’s as much at home there as any place. “I’ve been around it all my life,” he s...... continue reading

Hydroseeding Perspectives

By Carol Brzozowski

All across the United States, those who do hydroseeding and hydromulching are finding ways to address such challenges as drought and recession. Now more than ever, using quality hydroseeding materials and equipment is critical to these companies’ success. Working on the Railroad     Reel Neet in Olive Branch, MS, offers erosion and sediment control services, including hydroseeding, inlet protection, building retaining walls, providing sediment logs and flocculation, and installing silt fence, ...... continue reading

Dealing With Paradox

By John Trotti

A research report on loss of agricultural land to urbanization, http://www.k4health.org/pr/m13/m13chap3_3.shtml , landed on my desk a while back, in which it was pointed out that, in fact, three-quarters of the decline in ag-land is the result of other factors than those related to urbanization. While I agree that urbanization per se may not be a major driver in the loss of arable land, I don’t think this means we should curtail discussion on the subject of development and its impact on soil loss, water...... continue reading
