By Peter Hildebrandt Having smooth asphalt and road surfaces is not only safer for drivers and pedestrians but it also saves on wear and tear of road at the same time keeping those surfaces from having to be replaced and worked on as much as they were in the past. New technology can make sure the finished product is even better than it has ever been. Qualified and able equipment operators continue to remain vital as well. Logistics an Important Part of the Mix Finding skilled operators with the ability ...... continue reading

Written by Don Talend Combine fast-moving stormwater runoff with long-term population growth in the Phoenix area, and it’s no wonder that much of the stormwater infrastructure built decades ago needs upgrading. Such is the case with the Magma Flood Retarding Structure (FRS) located in Pinal County, AZ. The Magma FRS is part of a 336-mile long system of aqueducts, tunnels, pumping plants and pipelines comprising the Central Arizona Project, which was developed in 1968 and is designed to bring about ...... continue reading

Written by Daniel C. Brown Engineers for the major grader manufacturers have been hard at work lately. They have upgraded engines to Tier 4 Interim compliance. They have improved visibility and controls. Each company has optimized the weight, balance, and stability of the machine. John Deere, for example, has redesigned its G-Series graders to include an Interim-Tier-4-certified engine and the industry’s only choice between console-mounted or armrest-mounted industry standard fingertip controls. In recent years the Environmental Protection Agency has focused an entire body of regulations on exhaust gas emissions from off-road equipment. Indeed, the EPA has steadily tightened permissible limits on nitrogen-oxide gases and particulate matter being emitted from new off-road engines—and continues to do so. Yet now, empirical evidence points to the fact that earthmoving equipment fitted with GPS-based machine-control systems is much more efficient—and more “green”—than manually controlled equipment....... continue reading

“Our company slogan is, ‘We dig your dirt,’” states Steve Ristow, president of Schneider Excavating in Lannon, WI. “It pretty much captures what we do.” Not always, though. Schneider Excavating has established itself as being more than just the average dirt pusher. No question that the slogan is snappier than saying, “We specialize in site development, building excavations, road building, subdivision grading, solid waste land fill, and licensed hazardous-waste hauling.” The company considers itself a me...... continue reading

Grading contractor Bernie Schmidtlein recently spent just over $60,000 for an automated grader control system, and he’s glad he did. Last spring Schmidtlein used the system on its first project: a 31-acre tract of land that he and the crews of Schmidtlein Excavating graded for a Home Depot warehouse in Topeka, KS. To use a trimmer, stringline, and surveying hubs would have taken “three or four times longer,” Schmidtlein says, than the scant 45 hours he spent fine-grading the 10.5-acre building pad. In f...... continue reading
