Written by Ryan Johnson Bobcat compact equipment is aiding in the effort to keep hazardous wastes out of the Ada County landfill in Boise, ID, as well as preparing firebreaks around the perimeter and regularly assisting with excavating and grading projects. Landfill operations coordinator Kurt Hunt oversees the day-to-day operations at the facility, including the use of a Bobcat E45 excavator and a T650 compact track loader—both part of the M-Series line of Bobcat equipment. Helping Canada Go Green

Ed Benoit, who started his farm drainage business about 45 years ago, never guessed Benoit Drainage Ltd. would expand someday to include the construction of turbine wind farms. But today, his company is playing an important role in the construction of Canada’s largest wind farm. Projected to satisfy 20% of Canada’s renewable energy goals by 2025, the $300 million Kruger Chatham Wind Project is the largest to date in Canada. The project’s 88 wind turbines will generate enough electricity to power approxi...... continue reading

When Smaller Is Smarter

By Daniel C Brown

If it’s been some time since you looked at the new models of compact equipment, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what the manufacturers are offering. More new machines than ever are at the dealers to greet you. Like JCB, Volvo Construction Equipment now builds wheeled and tracked skid-steer loaders with a single loader-arm design. Volvo says the single-arm design features the same loading performance and durability of a traditional skid-steer design, yet improves visibility, safety, and cab access fo...... continue reading

A Lifetime in Timber

Some of the numbers associated with John Barber’s timber business are truly impressive: 42 years, 10,000 acres, and 10 million board feet. Numbers, such as 14 and 200, are significant, too, in understanding the success of this lifelong Adirondack Mountain–area resident. “Once I got into the timber business, I was hooked,” says Barber, 63, who owns Evergreen Timber Corp. in Hadley, NY. “I am not interested in retiring; this is what keeps me alive.” At age 14 he purchased his first parcel of land in north...... continue reading

When Is Enough Enough?

By Paul Hull

How often have parents told their children that enough is enough? It’s usually said to stop the littler ones from getting too excited, tormenting the neighbor’s cat, or getting generally out of hand. There’s a similar saying, too, not heard as often, except in the offices of doctors and dieticians. Enough is as good as a feast. Both sayings are true and both could refer to the equipment we use in our daily work. It’s not long ago that all excavators seemed huge, that dozers seemed better if they were en...... continue reading

Compact Loaders: Sorting the Choices

By Greg Northcutt

At one time, if you were a grading and excavating contractor looking for a loader with the ability to work quickly, efficiently, and productively on job sites where both time and maneuver room were in short supply, you were limited to a skid-steer machine. Now, of course, your choices of compact loaders also include those with rubber-track undercarriages, wheel machines with articulating frames, and rubber-tired tractors equipped with lift arms and a bucket on one end and a backhoe on the other. All are...... continue reading

From Police Officer to Full-Time Contractor

By Ryan Johnson

A former part-time job is now a full-time occupation for Chris Hembury, a retired New York City police officer from Nesconset, NY, who served for 20 years in the police department and worked at ground zero for three consecutive months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Hembury picked up part-time equipment operation jobs to earn some extra money when he wasn’t on duty as an auxiliary coordinator in the NYPD. It is quite common for police officers and firemen, according to Hembury, to supplement their inc...... continue reading
