Bringing the Big Pipe to O’Hare

Written by James McRay If the saying goes, “The whole is more than the sum of its parts,” then all those parts must absolutely be important in creating a dynamic final product. This adage is especially true at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, which is in the midst of one of the country’s largest construction projects. The O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP) is transforming O’Hare International Airport’s airfield from an outdated system of intersecting runways into ...... continue reading

Giving Erosion Control a Seat at the Table

Written by John Trotti While the economic picture has brightened for many of us and our potential clients, the lessons of the past few years have left an indelible stamp on the entire industry. As most of us in construction have seen, our clients are demanding a greater degree of justification for expenditures that don’t relate to their projected revenue streams, erosion control being a choice example of practices receiving special scrutiny. To complicate the issue further, corporate staffs have become ...... continue reading

Working in Cramped Quarters

GM Mechanical Inc., based in Covington, OH, recently installed a 20,000-gallon rainwater storage tank at Miami East High School in Casstown, OH. The 10-foot diameter, 38-foot-long tank was installed about 15 feet deep. No big deal, right? Well, there was one tiny, little, impediment: The contractor installed the tank less than 5 feet from three existing structures, including a wall of the high school. “Normally we subcontract for site work like that, but there were problems with the original design for ...... continue reading

Control Is Key

By Larry Trojak

Located in the Town of Tonawanda, NY, just north of downtown Buffalo, the I-190/I-290 interchange is one of the busiest in the area, handing better than 70,000 vehicles every day and serving as a vital link for traffic headed to and from Niagara Falls. Built in 1962, the pair of curved, twin elevated spans have been showing signs of wear for years and have been the cause of countless overturned vehicle accidents. Based largely on those facts, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) opte...... continue reading

Managing Subcontractors' Safety Performances

By Daniel C Brown

If you’re a general contractor, you want your subcontractors to work as safely as possible. To make that happen—especially for subs you don’t know or haven’t worked with before—you need to manage their safety performance, says Charles (Lewis) Raymond, a certified safety professional. He is the loss prevention manager for Gray Insurance Co. in Metairie, LA, and spoke on the subject at the Construction Safety Council meeting last February in Rosemont, IL. The low-bidding process can work against construct...... continue reading

Software Paves the Way

By Michael M Michelsen Jr.

Isn’t it great when a tool makes doing a job easier? Isn’t that what tools are for? But it also has to be the right tool for the right purpose for it to be efficient and to really save you time and money. You wouldn’t think of using a hand trowel to pave a road, would you? Certainly not, but in this computer-driven age, many contractors are doing what amounts to that by using outdated methods of running their business and without using the full potential of tools that will not only keep them competitive...... continue reading

A Mini-Solution to Major Work

By Jeff Winke

World War I became the testing arena for all sorts of new technology. Although Zeppelins, flamethrowers, and carrier pigeons did not survive, the use of planes did. At the height of the war, in fact, the US Secretary of War advocated an expanded role for aviation, and the establishment of “flying fields” where young men could learn the skills of aerial combat before traveling across the sea to help fight “The War to End All Wars.” One such airfield was to be located in Belleville, IL, about 20 miles eas...... continue reading
