Tightening the Belt One Notch at a Time

Posted By John Trotti Comments

This morning (January 26) Caterpillar announced a significant cut in its work force in response to sagging global sales. Coming from the construction equipment giant, this signal of tough times ahead for the heavy construction industry confirms the worst fears many have held on the depth and length of the downturn. While there’s nothing you or I can do to change the underlying factors involved, what we can do is make sure we’re doing everything in our power to increase the efficiencies of our operations.

The Technology in Construction department in our most recent issue of Grading & Excavation Contractor focuses on Earthwork Software, asking the question, “Where’s the Industry Headed?” The short answer is, “toward its full adoption,” but for the full story and how this might apply to your business I urge you to go to our January-February issue read the article "Earthwork Software" and  see what providers and users have to say on the subject.

If you’re a longtime subscriber, chances are you’re already taking advantage of earthwork software, but even so, to make sure you’re getting the most from your investment, you would still do well to read the article to see how others are using it. Then, too, if you’ve been using the same software for more than a year, you might want to check with your provider to see what’s new.

Many of us will be heading to Las Vegas next week (February 3–6) for the 2009 World of Concrete expo, where, along with all of the concrete slinging and finishing equipment, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the software people as well.
